"Not near field" means a standard control room + a decent monitor system. The heart of the studio system b4 the near and mid field shortcuts were discovered.
The main reason 4 nearfields creeping in2 the process was that with most modern applications, playback specs were compromised. Am radio and even fm radio, television, home systems, car systems- they all play a "sample" of the real deal.
Frequency response and dynamics were modified 2 overcome the medium's limitations: small cabinets, mono, narrow b/w, engine noise, a moving lis10er etc.
So, the edges (high and low ends) became "the make-up", crucial musical information had 2 b restricted 2 100-5Khz, phase panorama and room reverberation had 2 b assumed as less than ideal, and the criteria 4 a "good" mix turned in2 a set of compromises, or "how well will the mix translate on inferior systems".
So now we no longer use the entire spectrum - the edges r used 4 impact, not music. (With the exeption of club mixes).
We no longer use the full dynamic range, cuz of Mrs. Shwarzman from the VAAD.
We no longer use the full panorama and surround field, cuz the mix has 2 make sense when collapsed 2 mono, or when lis10ed 2 in a van.
Engineers began using inferior systems 4 checking the "translation" in realtime, and gradually the "shitbox" became the dominant tool cuz all had 2 pass it as QC.

Easier mixing, confidence, better color, better low end, better clarity, and IMO providing the customer with a much more exciting song in case the playback system IS good.
In the studio artistic decisions r taken @ the rate of 10/sec. A true good sounding and reliable system will lead the musician 2 better, more emotional artistic decisions.

When using soffit (flush) mounting monitors :
Bass response is better cuz the walls "help" the speaker, less amplification is required.
The midrange is smoother cuz there is less diffraction.
Out goes the back wall - no slap reflection (of a very small delay time and high energy that "colors" the sound the most).
A gr8 place 2 hide a KSESA (nothing gets spilled over the desk), or an emergency pack of cigarettes which may save some1's life.
(In my case it's the musicians' lives which r @ stake when I run out of Winstones).
