Multiband Compression - is basicly another way to deal with certain situations by dividing the compression to a few bands - it can be from 2 bands to what ever number that specific compressor is capable of dealing with.

multi band is not better then single band compression - its just another tool to use if needed.

there is one thing that before using multiband compression is important to know .

multiband compression can alter the mix ( change in different ways)
much more then single band compression and the reason for that is because how it works.

some engineers like having an arsenal of tools some like having only a few .

when i master a project i first try to figure out what i am listening to ( trying to hear the basic vibe of the music and recording ) and then i try out different gear to see what fits best in that situation

i like having a lot of tools in my mastering desk so i have 9 compressors each one has a different tone and vibe to it so it responses different to the different music and recordings.

some mastering engineers like only using single band compressors because they want to keep the mix as it was sent to them.
and some like having both
multi and single.
some like having multiband compression to be able to adjust different compressions on certain frequencies


and some like having both
multi and single



in the end whats important is bringing an objective and fresh ear to the project so it can hear the things that might have been overlooked by the mixing engineer / producer due to all the long hours of work on the project and knowing the ins and outs of every instrument in the mix-

there are alot of types of compressors each one will bring a different flavor to the sound even if its doing basiclly the same thing
